How to Choose the Right Fishing Boat
Not everyone has the need for speed on the water. It’s always a good time to pick up one of the oldest water sports: fishing. Fishing from the shore is fine, but some of the best catches are going to require a boat. Let Richardson’s Boat Yard in Windham and Standish, Maine help you choose the right fishing boat to fit your needs. Take a moment to read through our buying tips, and then check out one of the many fishing boats for sale at our dealership, including aluminum boats and used models. We’re near Portland and Auburn.
Freshwater vs. Saltwater
One of the biggest deciding factors is knowing where you want to fish and finding the boat that’s going to help you get there. Here in Maine, you’ll have access to both fresh and saltwater fishing areas and they’re each going to require slightly different features. If you’re staying in freshwater, think about how deep or how shallow the water is going to be. Shallow bodies of water will require a flat bottom so you avoid running aground or bumping into foreign objects. Bass are particularly common near the bank and a favorite among fishers.
When the waters get a little deeper, you’ll want a sharper V-bottom to your hull. This will help you cut through the water, even if the current is running pretty strong or choppy. This is also true of saltwater boats, although when you hit the ocean or the bay, you’ll want something that’s made out of sturdier materials. The waters on the ocean are much more unforgiving, so you’ll need something that can really hold its own. If you’re not sure where you’ll be fishing, think about the kinds of fish you’ll be searching for. Then figure out where they’ll be and find the fishing boat to match.
Size of your Crew
The next consideration you’ll want to make is the size of your boat. For all your general boating categories, you’ll have some range as far as size. Start by figuring out how many people will be in your boating party on a regular basis. You’ll want to make sure that everyone has at least a place to safely sit while the boat is in motion. Forcing someone to stand can be dangerous, not to mention you’ll start to feel a little cramped. Something like a duck boat or a center console are going to be great options if you’re a solo fisher or only bring one other person with you.
As the size of your fishing party grows, so should your size expectations for your boat. If you’re bringing the whole family, then a medium-sized boats can offer enough room for a small family, but there are also larger, luxury options that can give you the room you need and then some. They can even come with cabins below deck that offer a toilet, kitchen, and bedroom for those who like to make overnight trips. Keep in mind that size isn’t just about accommodating people. You’ll also want to make sure you have enough room for all your fishing equipment as well.
The Full Cost
Finally, don’t forget that you’ll be spending more money than what you see on the price tag. There are other things you’ll need to invest in as well, especially if you’re a first-time owner. This includes fuel, maintenance, insurance, parts, safety gear, slip rentals, and figuring out your storage options when you’re not using your craft. All of these things--and anything else you know you’ll have to buy--need to be figured into your budget before you make any final decisions.
